It's worth doing if it gives you joy.

I hated reading. That’s what I believed back in grade school. The books we read were plain, boring, and had big words for no reason. The teachers assigned us to a class where students had the same reading level during a period. Guess where the teachers put me? When I walked into that classroom, I felt I was the oldest one there.

Can you see why I hated reading? Things changed in middle school when I had to choose between being bored to death waiting for someone to pick me up from school or reading. (In my mind, those were my only options.)

But I found it! The book that would change my life forever. Inuyasha! It had an actual story, characters that weren’t cardboard, and pretty drawings. Reading manga was so much fun for me. Because of this, I wanted to become a writer too. End of story, right?

Not really

I knew writing and drawing a manga was hard. I just wanted to focus on the words. But books I was not interested in were still being forced on me. All I wanted to do was read manga.

In high school it came. The second book to change my life forever again. Thanks to Twilight. Back then I did not read the books or watched the movies. They advertised it on TV. all the time and I was sick of it.

I can find something better than that!

So I ended up finding a book that had vampires in it. Granted, I found the manga version first, then the book. Its name was Cirque du Freak. Although the title was difficult to read, the rest of it was not. And it got me excited to see what would happen next.

This book got me to pick up my pencil and started writing the story I wanted to write. And I’m still writing that story today.

The books I mentioned. What do you think they have in common?

They both have a main character who enters a new world filled with demons and vampires. Browsing through all the manga I’ve read over the years, those were the books I enjoyed reading the most.

It’s not just the supernature stuff, action, adventures, mysteries, and romance. Those are some of the things I like, so those are the things I write.

My goal is to be a full-time writer. Yes, I want to write books but video games, manga, and anime because they have stuck with me for a long time. I still have a long way to go, so I hope you join me on my journey towards becoming a better writer and creator.
